The History of the Hoobrook War Memorial

On Worcester Road close to the Hoobrook Roundabout

The Stone Obelisk stands on open ground on land where the old cottages and old schoolroom once stood and several of the men remembered once lived.  The monument has been moved several times due to road improvements. Its present position is in the middle of a large area of grass, between Chester Road South, a large roundabout on the A449 and the service road to the Viaduct Pub and some new houses. The memorial is decorated in relief 1914-1919. It remembers those who served and returned and 1 man who died from Hoo Brook

PRO PATRIA  Underneath at the Base a plaque reads in capitals,

“To the glory of God and in memory of those who gave services

and of Private Francis Perry who fell in the Great War 1914-1919

This stone is erected by the habitants of Hoo Brook”

On the other 3 sides are engraved with 38 names.

Hoo Brook is in the parish of St George’s C of E Church.  The obelisk had originally 36 names of villagers who fought and returned plus I man who died.  Two names were added at a later date.
