The History of St Marys Shrawley War Memorial Plaque and Cross
In Shrawley village, on the western side of the B4196 Stourport to Worcester road is a memorial cross. There are no individual names but an inscription at the base facing the road that reads
“Their name will live for evermore”
and at the back it says
“Great War 1914 – 1918″.
Inside Shrawley church on the north wall hangs an ornate marble memorial tablet with the inscription
To the Glory of God
and in Memory of
The Men of Shrawley
who gave their lives in
the Great War
Upon it are carved the name, rank & regiment of 17 men from the village who died in WW1, together with one more who died in WW2.
There is also a board (normally hanging in the village hall) with photos of all villagers involved in the Great War; in the centre panel are photos of the fallen.
Both were dedicated on 4th March 1920. Brigadier General J. A. Gibbon R.E. arrived at the church gate to be met by a guard of Honour. The Rev H. T Boultbee took a service first at the base of the old churchyard cross out side the church which included hymn “The Supreme Sacrifice” set to music by Mrs Belaribi who’s husband was being remembered. The congregation then progressed to the Wayside Cross, which stands below the church on the Worcester Road. The congregation then returned to the church to dedicate the tablet in the church.
