The History of Cookley War Memorial
for Captain William Hancocks
William Hancocks was the son of William and Edith Hancocks of Church House Severn Stoke, Worcester. William lived in Blakeshall, Wolverley. He was a Captain in 7th Worcestershire Regiment and was killed in action. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. His father William Hancocks of Blakeshall applied for permission for a memorial to his son on 7th November 1918 and Worcestershire Diocese granted this on 25 June 1918. An alabaster tablet was placed on the north wall of the chancel. A similar tablet was also placed in St John the Baptist Church Wolverley. Inscription reads

The Advowson of this church was presented to the

of a good son and brave soldier
William Hancock returned his right to appoint Vicars to the dioceses of Worcester in memory of his son
